Welcome to

Jane Goodstone Counselling

I strongly believe in the positive change counselling can bring to people's lives. I offer a confidential, empathetic and collaborative space which can help you to move forward with whatever it is that is keeping you feeling stuck, overwhelmed or down.

Why counselling?

Life can be challenging at times, and we do not always know which way to turn. Sometimes we need to talk to someone, in a confidential space, free from judgment and independent of those we are close too. We can then work out what it is we need and how we wish to move forward.

As a counsellor, I work with adults (18+), who wish to come to talk about what is troubling them, make sense of their experiences and who wish to seek change in their lives.

My clients come from a wide range of backgrounds but are often seeking similar goals.

They may wish to:

  • deal with the worries or anxieties that may be controlling or restricting their lives
  • deal with the emotional pain of difficult experiences
  • manage difficult emotions
  • improve the relationship they have with themselves
  • improve the relationships they have with others
  • set healthy boundaries in relationships or workplaces, and/or disconnect from toxic ones
  • move forward in life leaving behind their feelings of being overwhelmed or stuck with their circumstances or issues
  • find meaning and purpose in their lives
  • live life in a more joyful and fulfilling way.

Talking to a qualified professional about your problems can really help. Working together, we can help you to try and achieve your goals.

Here are some of the issues I can help with

abuse, addiction, affairs, anger management, anxiety, bereavement, chronic illness, carer support, depression, disability, discrimination, divorce/separation, domestic abuse, health-related issues, identity, loneliness/isolation, loss, low self-esteem, menopause, mid-life issues, neurodiversity, panic attacks, parenting, work related problems, relationship problems, self-harm, sexual abuse, social anxiety, stress, suicidal thoughts, trauma.

Mid-life challenges

Whilst I counsel adults of all ages, I have gained a lot of experience counselling adults in the middle stages of life.

At this stage you may be juggling the demands of children, partners, ageing parents, work and home. Maybe you have lost someone close or have recently split up from a long-term partner? Perhaps you have been diagnosed with a serious illness or you care for someone who has? If you are a woman, maybe the onset of menopause has de-stabilised you? Or maybe you are feeling a deep sense of loss as your role and identity in life changes?

Whatever your individual circumstances, the events of mid-life can be challenging to our mental health. It is a time of change which can give rise to a variety of difficult emotions. These feelings can be hard to manage and how we deal with them impacts not only ourselves, but our relationships with those close to us.

Talking about what is going on in our lives in a confidential, non-judgemental environment allows us to explore how we truly think and feel about our problems. It can help to make sense of our experiences and help us see different perspectives. As we begin to gain a deeper understanding of ourselves, we start to positively influence how we deal with things in the future, building and strengthening our ability to cope and allowing us to move forward in a more empowered way.

About me and my practice

I have worked in the counselling sector for over 10 years and been a fully qualified for over 5 years. I have worked as a counsellor in both community and clinical settings, as well as running my own private therapy practice. I strongly believe in the power of counselling and psychotherapy to help change peoples’ lives. I have witnessed this in both my client work and in my own life.

Whilst my modality is person-centred, I take a ‘pluralistic’ counselling approach recognising that what helps clients may be different therapeutic tools and techniques. During the first session, I invite clients to talk about what they think may help them and also what I am able to offer them. Working together, we will aim to set out some goals about what they would like to get out of therapy. During the course of the therapy, we will regularly review how the client is finding the therapy, as well as the goals we set, adjusting them if necessary.

Opening up about personal issues can feel daunting, and it’s completely natural for clients to feel unsure or unconfident about seeking support. I strive to create a welcoming, safe environment where clients feel comfortable and at ease. My approach is warm and grounded in respect, honesty and understanding. I move at the client’s pace, focusing on the concerns they choose to bring to each session.
